Spark Hawk, a full brother to multiple grade I winner Memories of Silver and a half-brother to two other stakes winners, won a turf stakes Sunday at Japan's Tokyo Race Course. The son of Silver Hawk and All My Memories was bred in Kentucky by Pam Gartin and John Phillips and has made all eight of his starts in Japan. He has earned ¥38,624,000 or $348,035 to date...Jockey Kendrick Carmouche has departed Sam Houston Race Park and will begin riding at Philadelphia Park for trainer Scott Lake. Carmouche, an apprentice at Sam Houston, was 11th in the jockey standings with a record of 215 starts, 17 wins, 17 second, and 19 thirds....Dogwood Stable president Cot Campbell will be singing his book: "Lightning in a Jar; Catching Racing Fever" at the Gulfstream Park clubhouse gift shop on Saturday Feb. 17. "Lightning in a Jar" was published by the Eclipse Press division of The Blood-Horse Inc.... In an election held Feb. 11, incumbents Wes Fitzpatrick, Dan Harralson, Trudy McCaffery, Dennis Meagher, and Suzanne Pashayan were elected to the board of directors of the California Thoroughbred Breeders Association along with newcomer Daniel Schiffer. They will serve three-year terms. About 80 members of the organization participated in the election at the CTBA library across the street from the backstretch at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, Calif. In other news, the CTBA membership crowned its champions for 2000, among them Tiznow, the Breeders' Cup Classic (gr. I) winner who was named California Horse of the Year, as well as 3-year-old colt of the year... A yearling filly from the first crop sired by Distorted Humor brought a final bid of $42,000 to top Sunday's opening session of the February mixed sale conducted by Fasig-Tipton Kentucky. Consigned by Blake Agency, the filly was purchased by Highclere. The filly was produced from the Quack mare Duck Decoy. Agent Elizabeth Blythe paid second-highest price of $40,000 for a Woodman--Slew City Slicker (by Slew City Slew) filly from the Crown Bloodstock consignment. The sales company reported 78 yearlings sold for a gross of $466,200, an average price of $5,977. The sale continues today...All Florida Owner Enhancement Awards will be increased by 100%, effective with Wednesday's program at Gulfstream Park. Track racing secretary David Bailey said the new level will continue through the March 16 closing...Citing family reasons, Barkley N. Porter has resigned as simulcast coordinator at Hollywood Park to return his family to his home state of Arizona. Porter served in the track's publicity, group sales, and marketing departments before becoming simulcast coordinator in 1991. Track president Rick Baedeker credited Porter for Hollywood Park's simulcasting growth during the 1990s.
