Fog City Stable's Buzzards Bay was put through his final pre-Kentucky Derby (gr. I) workout at Santa Anita Monday morning, posting a six-furlong bullet in 1:11 2/5 under regular jockey Mark Guidry.
The surprise Santa Anita Derby (gr. I) winner went in company with Florida Keys, a multiple allowance winner who is scheduled to race in a non-winners "other than" allowance race at Churchill Downs on the Run for the Roses undercard. Florida Keys was clocked in 1:12 3/5 with exercise rider Joe Vaca aboard.
Mullins caught Buzzards Bay galloping out seven furlongs in 1:26.
"We put a little better horse in front of him today," Mullins said. "We wanted him to have something good to run at. Mark was grinning ear to ear after. He said he just sat on him and let him do it on his own. He didn't even move his hands."
Buzzards Bay's Monday work had some drama, however, when he and Florida Keys picked up some unexpected company in the form of a Jenine Sahadi-trained worker with jockey Jose Valdivia Jr aboard. According to Mullins, Valdivia's horse, who was working a half-mile, picked up Buzzards Bay and Florida Keys at the half-mile pole and continued on with them to the wire, finishing just in front of the stablemates.
"(Buzzards Bay) could have definitely reeled that horse in if he wanted to, but he didn't," Mullins said. "I know it was tempting for Mark to not just blow by that horse, but he knew it was better to give him a good final work for the race. I'd hate to have seen what he'd have done (to his unwanted workmate) if he'd actually moved his hands on him and ridden him."
Buzzards Bay is set to leave California for Churchill Downs on Wednesday, along with Florida Keys and Mighty Beau, Keeneland's Shakertown Stakes (gr. IIIT) winner who is set to run in Friday's Aegon Turf Sprint (gr. IIIT). Mullins said Buzzards Bay will visit the track on Thursday and Friday for a one mile jog, followed by a one-mile gallop. On Saturday he's set to jog one mile under regular exercise rider Amy Mullins.
