They are stabled together on the backside of Churchill Downs and Sunday morning Kentucky Oaks (gr. I) contenders Sis City and Memorette logged their final workouts over the racetrack only minutes apart from each other.
Both fillies breezed after the renovation break.
First out of barn 41 was Memorette, a homebred for trainer and co-owner Bill Currin and wife Betty.
Currin's assistant, Ignacio Correas said the daughter of Memo, who finished third to Sis City in the Ashland (gr.I) worked five-eighths of a mile in 1:01 4/5.
"She finished very strong," Correas said after rider Joe Deegan returned with Memorette to the barn. "The filly looked very good after the breeze."
Trainer Richard Dutrow's mood was upbeat when assistant Michelle Nevin, who also rides the strapping daughter of Slew City Slew
, told him the filly breezed five-eighths of a mile in 1:02.
"It went like clockwork for us," Dutrow said. "Michelle says it might be the best she's (Sis City) ever felt."
Dutrow said his horse appears to enjoy the feel of the track at Churchill Downs more than the surface at Keeneland.
"She seems to be able to grab it better," he said. "I don't know why."
The probable heavy favorite heading into the Oaks, Sis City may prove tough to beat.
"Judging by how the filly's doing, someone's going to have to really step up," Dutrow said of the competition.
Also working today was Carl Nafzger trainee Aspen Tree whose time for five-eighths of a mile was 1:01 2/5.
"I didn't want to empty the filly," said assistant trainer Ian Wilkes. "I just wanted her to feel good."
Nafzger said a decision hadn't been made regarding entering Aspen Tree in the Oaks.
"We'll see how she comes out of this work," he said.
