A day after their 3-year-old colt Footstepsinthesand triumphed in the Two Thousand Guineas (Eng-I), the pair's 12-1 shot won the fillies' equivalent at the same Newmarket course.
The double triumph – in their first season working together – was the first since Noel Murless and Australian jockey George Moore combined to win both races with Royal Palace (Two Thousand) and Fleet (One Thousand). "Kieren gave her an unbelievable ride," O'Brien told Racing Post. "He couldn't believe how much she had improved after she won at Leopardstown."It's great for all the lads, they've put in a lot of effort. You do your best every season - sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't, but it's great when it does."
Fallon, who has now won the race four times in the last nine years, kept Virginia Waters, a Kingmambo filly, near the back of the 20-strong field and asked her to quicken in the last two furlongs of the one-mile race. Satin Kiss and Karen's Caper were the pacesetters.
She responded immediately and charged past leader Maids Causeway, the 5-1 favorite, to win by 2 1/2 lengths. Visa Bella took third place a further half-length away. A smiling Fallon told reporters, "I don't think I've ever been travelling so well in a Classic in my life. Russian Rhythm traveled well all the way (in this race in 2003) but this filly traveled even better and the way she has picked up and gone away is amazing."Owner Michael Tabor, who owns the filly jointly with Mrs. John Magnier, added, "It doesn't get any better than this - this is what you dream about. Kieren took his time with her, which is what she likes."You always hope that you will get off to a good start but you don't dream that it will be this good. One Classic winner is unbelievable, but to have two is just phenomenal."O'Brien said that Virginia Waters is likely to go to Epsom for the Vodafone Oaks (Eng-I)."I'll speak to Kieren but she is out of a Sadler's Wells mare and is probably bred to stay the mile and a half," he said.Karen's Caper held on for fourth after losing the place spot late, followed by Cape Colombine (5), Saoire (6), Pictavia (7), Bahia Breeze (8), Echelon (9), Fen Shui (10), Golden Legacy (11), Favourita (12), Joint Aspiration (13), Slip Dance (14), Simply Sunshine (15), Penekenna Princess (16), Satin Kiss (17), Love Thirty (18), Shanghai Lily (19) and Market Trend (20).
