With the Churchill Downs track soaked from overnight rains, trainer Nick Zito called off the works for three of his Kentucky Derby (gr. I) candidates Saturday morning and moved them to Sunday – weather permitting. Scheduled to breeze tomorrow are Wood Memorial Stakes (gr. I) winner Bellamy Road and the one-two finishers in the Florida Derby (gr. I): High Fly and Noble Causeway.
"I don't know the order, but hopefully we'll get a good track," Zito said. "I just want to see something nice and even, no struggle, just doing what they've been doing right now. That's what all trainers really like to see. That's what I like to see."
Zito's other Derby prospects are Andromeda's Hero and Sun King.
"I never dreamed of being in this position; I'm very grateful for it," he said.
Then Zito discussed the Derby field in general: "I said something about the Derby field being very consistent, and somebody corrected me and said, 'They're more than consistent; they're very good.' As far as consistency goes, there aren't many horses really that have had bad form. Most of them are consistent. I think it's deep. I'm glad we're part of that, obviously. We've got some deep horses, too."
