Jack McDaniel, president of Los Angeles Turf Club, Inc., which operates Santa Anita Park, has stepped down after two seasons at the helm, Magna Entertainment Corp. announced in a press release dated April 22.
Ron Charles, executive director of MEC's California operations, will take over as president of Santa Anita on an interim basis, according to Don Amos, chief operating officer of the track's Canadian-based parent company.
McDaniel, who brought an entertainment industry background to Santa Anita, was instrumental in the redesign and upgrading of Santa Anita's public areas, including the innovative Sirona's bar and restaurant, and the FrontRunner, the track's upscale clubhouse restaurant. But he was unable to turn around Santa Anita's recent downturns in attendance and handle that began prior to his appointment in January 2004.
Amos praised McDaniel's contributions to MEC's goal of creating exciting activities for customers at its racetracks. "Jack will continue to be a valued contributor to the team dedicated to the fulfillment of Frank Stronach's vision for horseracing," Amos said.
McDaniel will return to his entertainment facility company, Action Design and Production, which designs and constructs new entertainment venues.
"I enjoyed the opportunity to help spearhead the innovative entertainment strategies of MEC and its most important facility," McDaniel commented. "I owe the management team at Santa Anita much gratitude for their great support and look forward to further collaborations in the development of this entertainment destination."
