Beckys Shirt, Cajun Beat's Dam, Dead
Beckys Shirt, whose millionaire son Cajun Beat won the 2003 Breeders' Cup Sprint (gr. I), died April 3 from complications of colic after delivering a Storm Cat colt at Ashford Stud near Versailles, Ky. Bred by Strategy Bloodstock, the colt was placed on a nurse mare.Bred in Ontario, Canada, by Spring Farm, Beckys Shirt raced for Trevor P. Williams, winning five of 17 starts and earning $174,856 for trainer Richard Dutrow Sr. Beckys Shirt placed in four New York stakes, three of which were grade II events.Cajun Beat, owned by Satish and Anne Sanan's Padua Stable and John and Joseph Iracane, won the Sprint as a 3-year-old and finished second in Eclipse Award balloting for top sprinter. The gelding's career came to an abrupt halt after suffering a career-ending injury in the April 16 Commonwealth Breeders' Cup Stakes (gr. II) at Keeneland. Last trained by Bobby Frankel, Cajun Beat retired with seven wins from 19 starts and earnings of $1,159,100.Beckys Shirt (Cure the Blues--Thundertee, by Ye) was last bought for $850,000 at the 2004 Keeneland January horses of all ages sale by the Irish branch of the British Bloodstock Agency. She was sold in foal to Woodman and produced a filly from that mating. For her career, the 14-year-old mare produced five named foals, four of which are winners.
