Shamardal, Godolphin Racing's chief Kentucky Derby (gr. I) hope before his disappointing run in the UAE Derby (UAE-II) at Nad Al Sheba on March 26, is almost certain to miss the American classic May 7 due to sore shins.

Although he was reported to have been behind schedule, last season's champion European juvenile ran below expectations in the UAE Derby, taking an early lead before fading quickly in the home straight in the race won by stablemate Blues and Royals. At the time Godolphin racing manager Simon Crisford said Shamardal, under Frankie Dettori, had run too "fresh," but now an alternative explanation has emerged.

"Shamardal is slightly shin sore but otherwise seems very perky," Crisford said. "We will give him plenty of time before we decide what plans to make for him."

Blues And Royals, who is Godolphin's new hope for the Kentucky Derby, will be sent to the U.S. April 26. He will be ridden by stable jockey Frankie Dettori, who replaces Kerrin McEvoy. Dettori is able to ride in the Derby this year because there is no clash this year with the UltimateBet.com Two Thousand Guineas (Eng-I), which takes place a week earlier on April 30.
