B. B. Best Continues in Top Form for Florida Derby

Bea Oxenberg and Laurie Plesa's B. B. Best, third in Gulfstream's March 5 Fountain of Youth Stakes (gr. II) and one of the leading candidates for Gulfstream's $1 million Florida Derby (gr. I) April 2, will probably get one last work March 26 in preparation for the showcase event of the season one week later.

"He is doing just outstanding," said trainer Eddie Plesa Jr. Wednesday morning from his barn at Calder Race Course. "We couldn't be happier with his progress. I'll probably give him an easy mile breeze on Saturday and that will be about it until the race."

B. B. Best made the pace in the Fountain of Youth before surrendering the lead to High Fly near the eighth pole. Bandini was up in the late stages to gain the place with B. B. Best third, beaten a length-and-a- half for all of it.

The son of Yes It's True   is partially owned by Plesa's wife Laurie, and Plesa explained the recent partnership. The Oxenbergs had been Plesa's patrons for some time.

"This was the first horse Mrs. Oxenberg bought on her own since her husband passed away," Plesa said. "She asked if we would like to go in with her on this one and I was more than happy to do so. I was very comfortable with that."
