The win gives him earnings of $79,200. He is the first stakes winner bred by Lynn dek Russo at Minerva Stud.
In the $100,000 OBS Championship Stakes for 3-year-old fillies. Pandora PA Farm's Neverlacken cruised to a 2 3/4 length win over Thorobeam Farm's Miami Princess. Pamela Halter's Airizon, who held the lead until the field neared the quarter pole, settled for third. Neverlacken, by Smoke Glacken, was ridden by Shaun Bridgmohan for trainer Rick Violette, Jr., and ran the 1 1/16 miles in 1:45 4/5.Consigned to the 2004 OBS March Sale by Spencer Knight, agent for Auburn Ark Stable, she was purchased by Pandora for $100,000. Supplemented to the race, she improved her record to 5-3-1-1 and upped her earnings to $131,240.
In the afternoon's first race, Jorge Chavez sent Tanourin Stable's Babaganush through on the inside of pacesetting Lakes Tune at the top of the stretch to take command and then held off a late charge by Sal and Colleen Simeone's Higher World to win the $50,000 OBS Sprint for fillies by a length. Equirace.com's Pick Five checked in third, another 1 1/2 lengths behind. Rodolfo Garcia saddled the winner, a 3-year-old filly by Capture the Gold, who ran the six furlongs in 1:11 4/5. She was bred in Florida by Cloverleaf Farms II. It was the 11th Ocala win for Chavez, who began the day as the leading rider in OBS Championship Day history.
Babaganush was purchased by Tanourin Stable for $31,000 at the 2004 OBS April Sale. She was consigned by Cloverleaf Farms II and Brent Fernung. The win gives her a 5-2-1-1 record and earnings of $134,900.
Micki Bracken's Gower stalked the early pace in the $50,000 OBS Sprint for colts and geldings, swung wide under Eddie Castro to take the lead in the upper stretch, then continued on gamely to beat W R Thoroughbreds' Hostile Witness by 1 3/4 lengths. Take Five Stable's Rompburger, who disputed the early pace, held on for third another 6-1/2 lengths back.Trained by Jim Bracken, the 3-year-old colt by Mecke, bred in Florida by David Poll, ran the six furlongs in 1:10. Consigned to the 2004 OBS March Sale by Ocala Stud Farms, agent, Gower was purchased by Bracken for $45,000. He exits the race with a 9-2-3-0 record and $62,430 in earnings.
In the afternoon's third race, P.J. Wilcoxson's Bog Hunter nailed Hamco Group LLC's Above the Wind in the final stride to win the $40,000 Florida Thoroughbred Charities Stakes by a nose, with Nikki and Roger Schick's Carey's Gold 1 1/2 lengths back in third. Bog Hunter, a 6-year-old Florida-bred gelding by Hunting Hard, was ridden by Eddie Castro and is trained by his owner. He was bred by Triple S Farm, Inc.The time for the five furlongs was :57 2/5. The winner is a two-time OBS graduate, selling as a weanling at the 1999 Fall Mixed Sale and again as a yearling at the 2000 August Sale. The win gives him a 38-6-4-8 record and earnings of $251,273.
After being far back early, William Janulis' homebred Stormin' Daina rallied in the middle of the track to defeat John Ropes' Miracle Runner by 1 1/2 lengths in the $40,000 Florida Breeders' Distaff Stakes. Francis C. McDonnell's Family Favorite finished another 2 3/4 lengths back in third. Phil Teator rode the 4-year-old Florida-bred daughter of Storm Creek for trainer Bryan Baker. The time for 1 1/16 miles was 1:47 1/5. Stormin' Daina is now 25-4-3-4 and has earned $86,160.
