Detention Barn Planned for Belmont Park

The New York Racing Association plans to set up a detention barn for horses running in all races beginning with the opening of the Belmont Spring meeting on May 4.

The plan is still in the developmental stages and the logistics, including how far in advance of racing horses would need to be in the detention barn, have not yet been finalized. All horses, including those shipping in from other racing jurisdictions, would be required to meet the same standards as those stabled in New York.

The move is part of a continuing effort by NYRA to crack down on performance enhancing drugs. On the heels of trainer Greg Martin's role in a milkshaking case uncovered late last year, testing for milkshakes began in February. No positive tests or milkshakes have been made public.
