Salt Champ, an Argentine champion who won the Jan. 30 Santa Monica Handicap (gr. I) in her North American debut, has been retired from racing after suffering a slight strain in a tendon during a workout at Santa Anita.
Trained by Richard Mandella for Arturo Vargas of Argentina, Salt Champ defeated last year's Santa Monica winner, Island Fashion, by a length in the seven-furlong event. Foaled in 2000, Salt Champ (Salt Lake--Wandel, by Fitzcarraldo) retired with five wins, all in stakes, from eight starts and earnings of $217,541. Three of her wins came in Argentine group I events.Breeding plans are incomplete.
