Bob Baffert got his first big indication that he purchased a runner in Global Gait Thursday morning when the son of Concern worked a sharp 7 furlongs in 1:25, with Baffert catching him his last quarter in :23 3/5 and final three-eighths in :34 4/5.
What impressed Baffert the most was that he worked him with another of his top 3-year-olds, who spotted Global Gait a 4-length head start, only to have Global Gait roar by him. "This is a very good horse," Baffert said. "He looked awesome."
Baffert said Global Gait will make his next start in either the Risen Star Stakes or Fountain of Youth (gr. I). He won't decide until he has a chance to inspect the Gulfstream track on Saturday when he saddles Captain Steve in the Donn Handicap (gr. I).
Baffert purchased Global Gait for Bob and Beverly Lewis following the gelding's victory in the Maryland Juvenile Championship at Laurel last December.
Baffert also confirmed that Point Given, winner of the Hollywood Futurity, will make his 2001 debut in the San Felipe Stakes (gr. II) March 17.
