Laser Light Dead in Florida
Laser Light, a New York grade I winner and Kentucky Derby (gr. I) runner-up, was euthanized Feb. 10 at Charlotte Weber's Live Oak Stud near Ocala, Fla., because of complications from the infirmities of old age. The 26-year-old son of Majestic Light spent most of his years at the farm as a teaser in the stallion barn after proving infertile at stud. He sired just six foals, two of which were winners.One of the top 2-year-olds of 1981, Laser Light won the Remsen Stakes (gr. I) at Aqueduct and twice was second to that year's champion juvenile male Deputy Minister in two grade I stakes. His loss in the Laurel Futurity (gr. I) came by just a nose.Laser Light went into the Kentucky Derby off a third-place finish in the Wood Memorial Stakes (gr. I). Ninth at the eighth pole in the Run for the Roses, he passed all but Gato Del Sol on the way to the finish. Laser Light went winless that year and retired with two wins from 13 starts and earnings of $291,624 for trainer Patrick J. Kelly.A half-brother to multiple New York grade II winner Junction, Laser Light is out of stakes winner Peaceful Union (by Royal Union). Laser Light is buried at Live Oak near Peaceful Union's stakes-winning half-brother Medieval Man and near millionaire Dispersal.
