Kansas City Boy Tunes Up for Fountain of Youth

Ken McPeek-trained Kansas City Boy, runner-up in the Holy Bull Stakes (gr. III), turned in a five-furlong breeze Feb. 28 at Gulfstream Park in preparation for Saturday's $300,000 Fountain of Youth Stakes (gr. II).

"I got him right around a minute," said McPeek. "He went out really early this morning. I wanted him to work yesterday, but the track was sealed. It turned out OK and he worked good and he went well."

Joining Kansas City Boy, a son of Boston Harbor, were two other 3-year-olds, Diamond Isle and Wild Desert, who each worked five furlongs in 1:01 4/5. Their progress and the chance of a poor draw for Kansas City Boy could earn Wild Desert a start in the Fountain of Youth as an entrymate.

"I would like Kansas City Boy to draw an outside post," said McPeek. "His last couple of races he's been up toward the lead and I don't think he needs to be out there setting the pace like that. If he draws outside he can settle back and make a kick at the end. But if he gets an inside post, I might enter Wild Desert with him and we'll see what happens from there."

Wild Desert and Kansas City Boy are both owned by Sarah Lyn Stables of Carl Gessler and Dan Wigginton.
