The 34th running of the $500,000 Lane's End Stakes (gr. II) at Turfway Park has drawn 130 nominations. The race, run at 1 1/8 miles as an early prep for the Kentucky Derby (gr. I), is March 26.
Eclipse Award- winning trainer Todd Pletcher has nominated 17 to the Lane's End. Scipion, winner of the Risen Star and third in the Cradle Stakes at River Downs, is also on the list for trainer Patrick Biancone. Nicholas Zito has nominated nine, including Cradle Stakes winner Bellamy Road, Aventura Stakes winner High Fly, and Sun King, third in both the Champagne and the Breeders' Cup Juvenile (both gr. I). Other trainers represented by multiple nominees include Bobby Frankel with seven, Kenneth McPeek with five, Bob Baffert with four, and D. Wayne Lukas with three.
Also nominated is Snack, the come-from-behind specialist who won both the Turfway Prevue and the WEBN Stakes at Turfway to start his 3-year-old campaign. Trained then by Michael Lauer for his wife, Penny Lauer, Snack was subsequently sold to J. Paul Reddam and moved to the barn of Southern California-based Doug O'Neill.
Horses nominated to the Lane's End Stakes also are eligible to run in the John Battaglia Memorial Stakes on March 5, as well as the Hansel Stakes and the Rushaway Stakes on the Lane's End undercard.
