Jockey Russell, Trainer Pender Get First Win

Jockey Chris Russell and trainer Mike Pender teamed to break their maiden at Santa Anita Wednesday.

Russell won in his 19th ride at the Arcadia track. The 23-year-old Maryland native won the fifth race aboard Orange 'Em. Trainer Pender is a 38-year-old former clinical psychologist.

Russell was a former hot walker for Mike Machowsky, a groom for Roger Stein and an exercise rider for Don Warren and Matt Chew.

Pender has six horses in training at Hollywood Park.
