Trainer Nick Zito, sends out Sun King in an allowance test Saturday.
Tracy Farmer's Sun King, third in the Bessemer Trust Breeders' Cup Juvenile (gr. I) and Champagne Stakes (gr. I), will make his 3-year-old debut in a one-mile allowance race at Gulfstream Park Feb. 26.
"He's really doing well, and I just hope he gets a good race first time out and go from there," trainer Nick Zito said of the son of Charismatic. "It's a good race for him to start back in. I'm a traditionalist, and this is the old way. He looks great and has put on a lot of muscle over the winter. I don't think he'll let us down. If he improves, as most of our horses usually do, we'll be OK."
As of noon Thursday, 19 horses had passed the entry box, so there is a good chance the race will be split. Among those entered are Shug McGaughey's promising Danzig colt Survivalist, a troubled third in a recent allowance sprint; Todd Pletcher's impressive maiden winner Monarch Lane (Maria's Mon
), as well as the Zito-trained Indy Storm (A.P. Indy
Zito also will be in action at Tampa Bay Downs on Saturday, where he'll run Andromeda's Hero ((Fusaichi Pegasus
) and possibly G P's Black Knight (Tiger Ridge
) in the Sam F. Davis Stakes, which is the race that launched The Cliff's Edge
's 3-year-old campaign last year. The following Saturday, Zito will saddle recent maiden winner Noble Causeway (Giant's Causeway
)in a non-winners of one allowance race.
There is also a possibility he'll run newly acquired High Fly, winner of the Aventura Stakes, in the Fountain of Youth (gr. II) if the son of Atticus
turns in a big work on Saturday. High Fly was turned over to Zito by owner Charlotte Weber following his third-place finish as the beaten favorite in the Holy Bull Stakes (gr. III). "If he works good Saturday, I might take a shot," Zito said.
Zito said another of his promising 3-year-olds, Electric Light (Silver Ghost
), suffered an injury while finishing fourth in the Risen Star Stakes (gr. III), and will be out about two months.
