Jose Amy Gets First Win Since Reinstatement

Jockey Jose Amy, 51, made his first trip to the winner's circle Monday in nearly a quarter of a century when he guided Mon Over Miami to victory at Aqueduct.

"I'm so happy," the Puerto Rico native said. "I want to thank (trainer Dominic) Galluscio because he gave me all the confidence since I've been back."

Amy had his jockey license reinstated last fall after 24 years in riding exile for his role in a 1970s race fixing case. The mounts have been few for Amy since his return, mostly for Galluscio.

The winning ride in Monday's sixth race was a beauty. Amy saved ground all the way and was moving away through the final furlong.

"I'm so glad he had faith in me and kept me on," Amy said. "I knew sooner or later I was going to win a race. I'm looking forward to riding a few more."

Amy plans to continue his comeback in New York where he rode regularly from the early 1970s until being ruled off in 1980.
