Leroy Nelson, who fell off his mount in the second race Wednesday at Gulfstream Park, suffered a separated shoulder and will be out of action for an indefinite period, according to Jockey Guild representative Roger Velez.
Velez said Nelson had an operation on the same shoulder last year after a spill.
Nelson was taken to Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood after falling off Hail to the World Wednesday.
Hail to the World would have finished third had Nelson kept hold of the horse but stewards ruled he was coming off before they reached the wire and therefore Hail to the World did not carry the assigned weight. He was placed last.
Nelson, 25, said in the ambulance, "The horse took a bad step." Hail to the World bobbled on the far turn.
