Frank Stronach, winner of both the owner and breeder Eclipse Awards.
The goal of any breeder is to breed a horse that wins a major race. Frank Stronach's vast Adena Springs operation did just that and then some in 2000. First, there was a classic winner, Red Bullet. Then there were two Breeders' Cup winners: Macho Uno and Perfect Sting. Throw in two more grade I winners, Collect the Cash and City Zip, and a total of 24 individual stakes-winning horses--not to mention, Eclipse Award finalist status for both breeder and owner--and you have a major year for any breeder.
Red Bullet pulled off the big upset of the year, defeating Kentucky Derby (gr. I) winner Fusaichi Pegasus in the Preakness Stakes (gr. I). He won four of his six starts during the year and earned $980,300. Macho Uno won three of four of his juvenile starts, losing once by just a neck. He capped his year with a nose victory in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile (gr. I). Perfect Sting was very nearly perfect in 2000, winning five of six starts and making amends for her only loss of the year--a second in the WinStar Galaxy Stakes (gr. IIIT)--by taking the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf (gr. IT). She earned $1,367,000 in 2000.
Stronach was the Eclipse Award-winning owner in 1998 and 1999. He has three Adena Springs Farms: one in Canada, one in Kentucky, and one in Florida. For the past several years, the operation has held its own broodmare sale in the fall at Fasig-Tipton Kentucky.
Stronach owns Magna International, an auto-parts manufacturer based in Toronto, and heads Magna Entertainment, which owns seven racetracks, including Santa Anita and Gulfstream Park.
