Lucy Young-Boutin's Inexplicable, making his first start in stakes company, rallied through the stretch under jockey Jose Santos to win the $200,000 New Hampshire Sweepstakes (gr. IIIT) by a nose Saturday at Rockingham Park. The 5-year-old son of Miswaki out of the Nureyev mare, Mythomania, completed the "about 1 1/8 miles" in in 1:45.04 over firm turf. Trained by Christophe Clement, Inexplicable returned $9.80, $4.40, and $2.80. The exacta paid $42.
Where's Taylor led by 2 1/2 lengths at the eighth pole but tired late and was caught at the wire by the winner. Distant Mirage finished 2 1/4 lengths farther back in third, followed by The Kaiser, Makeyourselfathome, Johnny Dollar, Main Street, Birdie's Jet, and Super Red. Haami, the 9-5 favorite, pulled up and was vanned off the track.
Inexplicable earned $120,000 for the win, and improved his career record to five wins from 13 starts. He was bred in Kentucky by Delong Rd. Stable. (Chart,
