Ema Bovary, a Chilean-bred mare who was one of the top sprint mares in 2003-04, was retired after injuring her left front ankle during a workout Feb. 12 at Golden Gate Fields. Ema Bovary had not raced since winning the Princess Rooney Handicap (gr. II) at Calder Race Course last July. Her season ended after she came down with a minor illness.

Owned by Richard Beal Jr. and Lana Ramsey-Borg, Ema Bovary won 10 of her 12 North American starts at six different tracks. Nine of those wins came in stakes, including the Las Flores Handicap (gr. III) at Santa Anita.

Foaled in 1999 and stakes-placed in Chile, Ema Bovary (Edgy Diplomat--Coqueta, by Domineau) retired with 13 wins from 19 races and earnings of $721,642. Breeding plans are incomplete.
