The gritty gelding Yougottawanna registered a repeat victory in the $86,250 Seabiscuit Breeders' Cup Handicap (gr. III) Saturday at Bay Meadows, going gate to wire to win by 1 1/4 lengths over Jake Skate.
Favored Adreamisborn finished up third in the 1 1/16-mile affair, 2 3/4 lengths behind the winner. The final time was 1:41 2/5.
Yougottawanna has now won three of four races lifetime-all stakes victories-at Bay Meadows, including the 2002 El Camino Real Derby (gr. III) for trainer Jerry Hollendorfer. Now 6, the son of Candi's Gold has been claimed a couple of times since then. But he's back with Hollendorfer, who has kept him in stakes company since taking him for $80,000 prior to last year's Seabiscuit, which he also won in front-running fashion.
Saturday with Jason Lumpkins aboard, Yougottawanna stole away to a three-length lead after a half mile while staking fractions of :22 2/5 and :45 2/5. He maintained a two-length edge on the far turn after a quick three-quarters in 1:09 2/5 and turned away a menacing challenge from Jake Skate and Iggy Puglisi in upper stretch when the two rivals drew nearly even. Yougottawanna put his foe away while winning in a full drive.
The chestnut registered his 10th win in 32 lifetime efforts (to go with seven seconds and five thirds) and pushed his earnings to $626,624, while paying a generous $12.60, $6 and $3.40 as the fourth choice in the field of seven.
The California-bred earned $41,250 for his current owner, Peter Redekop B.C. Ltd.
Jake Skate, who defeated both Adreamisborn and Yougottawanna in their last start, the Lafayette Handicap, on a sloppy track at Golden Gate Fields Jan. 1, returned $4.20 and $2.60. Adreamisborn, who won last August's Longacres Mile (gr. III) at Emerald Downs for Hollendorfer, paid $2.60 to show with Russell Baze aboard.
Habaneros, Third Half, Desert Bloom, and Freddy followed.
