The Morris Animal Foundation is funding 14 new equine health studies during its 2001 fiscal year that will focus on colic, digestive tract disorders, foal diseases, genetics, infectious diseases, musculoskeletal disorders, pain management, and surgery. The projects include one at the University of Florida that will explore the use of acupuncture to provide analgesia in certain cases of equine colic and another at Ohio State University that will examine the same therapy's effectiveness in blocking pain associated with surgery.
In addition, the foundation will continue to provide financial support to four other equine health studies that are already in progress. The nonprofit organization's equine grants will total $480,272 for 2001.
