Santa Anita to Honor Delahoussaye March 5
Eddie Delahoussaye, one of the greatest jockeys in Thoroughbred history, will be honored at a March 5 Santa Anita Park winner's circle ceremony on Santa Anita Handicap day.Delahoussaye, who retired two years ago with 6,384 victories, is one of the most popular jockeys in track history. He rode 1,453 winners at Santa Anita, including 159 stakes, and was widely admired for his cool and technical approach to riding. He rode two Santa Anita Derby (gr. I) winners, including 1992 Horse of the Year A.P. Indy, and captured the 1996 Santa Anita Handicap (gr. I) aboard Mr Purple.He rode back-to-back Kentucky Derby winners in 1982 and '83, and was inducted into racing's Hall of Fame in 1993. Delahoussaye's final Santa Anita victory came aboard Ringaskiddy in the San Juan Capistrano Handicap on April 21, 2002. He sustained head and neck injuries four months later in a spill at Del Mar, leading to his retirement.Fans on-track will receive free Delahoussaye posters. "I'm not into honors and all of that stuff," said Delahoussaye. "It's going to be nice, especially to see the fans, but you know me. I don't like all of that attention."Delahoussaye, 53, has lived in Arcadia for 25 years and is still a frequent visitor to Santa Anita. He now works as a bloodstock agent, assisting owners in acquiring horses.
