Ivor Balding, Won Saratoga Title, Dies at 96

Ivor Balding, the leading trainer at Saratoga in 1966 who was associated for many years with owner C.V. Whitney, died Jan. 21. He was 96. Memorial services will be Jan. 26 at Grace Episcopal Church in Camden, S.C.

A native of Leicestershre, England, Balding became farm manager for Whitney at his farm in Old Westbury, N.Y., in 1936. Three years later, he moved to the Whitney Farm near Lexington.

In 1961, Balding became Whitney's trainer and won the training title at Saratoga in 1966 when he saddled nine winners.

Balding was a professional polo player and attended Cornell University. His survivors include his wife, Polly Porter Balding, three daughters, one son, three stepdaughters, eight grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren.
