Colonial Colony, Alumni Hall in Maxxam Gold Cup

Chris Nolan's Colonial Colony, winner of the 2004 Stephen Foster Handicap (gr. I) at Churchill Downs, and William Farish, James Elkins, and Temple Webber's Alumni Hall, winner of the 2004 Black Tie Affair Handicap at Arlington Park, figure to vie for favoritism in the Jan. 22 Maxxam Gold Cup, a $100,000 event for 4-year-olds and up at 1 1/8 miles at Sam Houston Race Park.

Colonial Colony won the six-horse Stephen Foster at 62-1 odds. In his most recent start, he finished fourth in the Dec. 31 Louisiana Handicap at Fair Grounds. Trainer Dallas Stewart said the 7-year-old son of Pleasant Colony raced well in the 1 1/16-mile Louisiana Handicap and should like the added distance.

Alumni Hall, trained by Neil Howard, finished second in the Louisiana Handicap. Like Colonial Colony, the 6-year-old son of A.P. Indy will ship to Texas from his Fair Grounds base.

Alumni Hall is the 9-5 morning-line favorite, followed by Colonial Colony at 5-2. Here's the complete field, with jockeys and weights, in post-position order:
