Ambition Unbridled, with Corey Lanerie up, wins the Dr. A.B. Leggio Memorial Handicap, Saturday at Fair Grounds.
Ambition Unbridled took the Dr. A.B. Leggio Memorial Handicap field gate to wire to post a 21-1 upset in the $100,000 dash for fillies and mares over the Stall-Wilson turf course.
Ridden by Corey Lanerie, the 4-year-old daughter of Unbridled's Song
completed the 5 1/2 furlongs on firm turf in 1:04.10. She broke on top and moved to the rail, dueling down the backstretch with Datttsdawayilikeit through an opening quarter-mile in :21.90. Rounding the far turn, the speedy gray disposed of that rival and opened up a clear advantage after as the field straightened for home.
The stalking duo of Tara's Touch and Our Love took up the chase, but could not make an impact on Ambition Unbridled, who gamely held on to defeat Tara's Touch by a half-length on the wire. Our Love was another head back in a pack of horses to nose out third.
Trained by Gamaliel Vazquez for Fair Grounds' leading owner and Eclipse Award finalist Michael Gill, Ambition Unbridled returned $44.20, $18.20 and $13.80. The South African-bred Tara's Touch returned $9.40 and $8 and Our Love was $8 to show. Dyna Da Wyna, the 2-1 choice in the field of 13, gave way in the stretch and struggled home 11th.
Ambition Unbridled, who finished fourth behind three of her Leggio rivals after setting the pace in a local prep race two weeks ago at Fair Grounds, gained her fifth lifetime win and boosted her earnings to $215,386.
