Keeneland January's Results Show Confidence in Industry
Keeneland's January horses of all ages sale ended Saturday afternoon in Lexington, Ky. with one of its highest gross revenues in history. By Keeneland's count, the total of $53,418,000 ranked as the third-largest amount ever. However, based on The Blood-Horse's records, which do not include the results of the Nelson Bunker Hunt dispersal in 1988, the gross was the second-highest, ranking behind only the $60,937,500 total of 2000. This year's gross was an 8.3% increase from last year's comparable figure of $49,344,900.Keeneland sold 1,361 horses during the six-day auction for an average price of $39,249, which was up less than 1% from last year's average of $39,225. The median of $13,000 was the same as in 2004. Last year, when the auction was five days long, 1,258 horses were sold."In general, the sale was very strong," said Geoffrey Russell, Keeneland's director of sales. "Confidence has returned to the breeding market, which 2001 (with the 9/11 terrorist attacks and mare reproductive loss syndrome) dampened. Everybody I talked to was very happy. Buyers were having a hard time buying, and sellers were enjoying selling."Two horses brought $1 million or more during the sale, which was topped by the $1.35 million paid for Cozzene's Angel, the 11-year-old dam of multiple grade I stakes winner Toccet. She is in foal to Pulpit. Reiley McDonald of Eaton Sales, as agent for an undisclosed partnership, bought Cozzene's Angel from Hill 'n' Dale Sales Agency, agent. She is by Cozzene out of Charming Pan, by Trepan.Keeneland had not sold a seven-figure horse in January since 2002. Ten horses brought $500,000 or more this year."It's good to go into the breeding season (beginning in February) on a high note," Russell said.Keeneland sold 165 horses during Saturday's final session for a gross of $1,197,400, an average of $7,257, and a median of $3,500. A 4-year-old filly by Two Punch out of Bayou La Batre brought $80,000 to top the final session. Vic Hanson bought Two Bayou from the consignment of Brookdale Sales, agent for Flatbird Stable.
