The last five races at Golden Gate Fields were called off Thursday due to safety concerns voiced by jockeys.
There were no incidents at the track, which was drying out after recent powerful rainstorms, but riders felt the main track surface was uneven in places, creating a hazard for themselves and horses. Management made the decision to cancel after the third race was completed.
The track was listed as muddy on both Wednesday and Thursday. No further rain is in the forecast for this weekend. The $100,000 Golden Gate Derby is Saturday.
