Castledale Returns in San Fernando

(from Santa Anita report)
Last year's Santa Anita Derby (gr. I) winner Castledale makes his first start since finishing 14th in the Kentucky Derby (gr. I) in the $200,000 San Fernando Breeders' Cup Stakes (gr. II) for 4-year-olds at 1 1/16 miles Saturday at Santa Anita Park.

Castledale, an Irish-bred colt, registered a 30-1 upset in the Santa Anita Derby but never was in contention in an eventful "Run for the Roses". He was geared for a summer campaign but was held back by trainer Jeff Mullins for undisclosed reasons for the rest of the season.

A field of 12 will contest the second leg of the Strub series, which concludes with the Feb. 5 Strub Stakes at 1 1/8 miles.

Likely to vie for favoritism is Mass Media, a troubled fifth as the choice in the Malibu Stakes (gr. I) at seven furlongs on opening day. The son of Touch Gold   will be ridden by Patrick Valenzuela for trainer Bobby Frankel.

Frankel needs three wins to become the second trainer in Santa Anita history to reach 800. The late Charlie Whittingham leads with 869.

Indian Country, winner of his last three races, makes his stakes debut for trainer Bob Baffert.

Imperialism returns to the main track after closing well on turf in his two most recent starts, the Oak Tree Derby (gr. IIT) and the Hollywood Derby (gr. IT) for trainer Kristin Mulhall.

Trainer Doug O'Neill entered three horses in the Grade II San Fernando: Skipaslew, Harvard Avenue and Perfect Moon.

Richard Mandella entered a pair, 2003 Breeders' Cup Juvenile (gr. I) winner Action This Day and Minister Eric, who was runner-up in that race. Both have been disappointing since.
