Breeders' Cup Foal Nominations, Revenue Reach Record Level

A record 15,850 foals were nominated to the Breeders' Cup program in 2004, Breeders' Cup officials said Jan. 13.

The 15,850 foals by stallions nominated to Breeders' Cup, the European Breeders' Fund, and the Common Fund top the old mark of 15,786 foals nominated in 2000. The 2004 total also represents a 5.7% increase in nominated foals from 2003. (The results don't include Southern Hemisphere foals, which have an April 15 nomination deadline.)

Foal nominators paid a one-time fee of $500 per foal by Oct. 15, 2004, which made their foals eligible to the Breeders' Cup program for their entire racing careers. For the first time, foals that weren't nominated by Oct. 15 could be nominated by Dec. 15 for a one-time fee of $1,500. In all, 88 foals were nominated after Oct. 15 under the new rule.

Total foal nomination revenue generated by the 2004 foal crop of $8,016,000 was the highest revenue total since the nomination process began in 1982.

Breeders' Cup foal nominations have increased since the abatement of mare reproductive loss syndrome, which swept through the Kentucky farms during the spring of 2001. The number of Kentucky foals nominated to the Breeders' Cup program in 2004 was 8,108, up 12.7% from the 7,193 Kentucky foals nominated last year.

"We are delighted with this year's record-breaking nomination totals, and our steady increases since the MRLS incident," Breeders' Cup president D.G. Van Clief Jr. said in a release. "We greatly appreciate the continued support of our nominators, whose funding of our purse programs is an integral part of the global effort to grow our industry."

Stallion nominators pay an annual fee equal to their stallion's advertised stud fee in order to make them eligible to the Breeders' Cup program.

Breeders' Cup foal and stallion nominations fund the purses for the Breeders' Cup World Thoroughbred Championships, the Breeders' Cup Stakes Program, and other marketing and television initiatives underwritten by the National Thoroughbred Racing Association.
