Apprentice jockey Jorge Herrera, who has been at Legacy Emmanuel Hospital since a spill Monday afternoon, is improving, according to doctors.
Herrera suffered a fracture of the facet joint of the seventh cervical
vertebrae. The fracture is the result of a fall when he and his mount, Nasty Jab, clipped heels with another horse at Portland Meadows on Monday afternoon.
The "stable fracture" is the best prognosis Herrera could have hoped for since the injury will not require surgery. It is uncertain how long he will be out.
Doctors expect Herrera to be released from the hospital no later than Thursday morning.
