The Coolmore stallion season auction to benefit the victims of the tsunami in Southeast Asia came to a close Tuesday with the international stallion farm raising more than $3.5 million for the relief effort headed by the International Red Cross. Of the total, $2.2 million was raised from the sale of seasons and the remainder of the amount was donated by a friend of Coolmore.
"We would like to express our sincere thanks to the many people who placed bids in the auction -- regardless of the winning outcome," a release from Coolmore read. "Every bid helped to increase the final total. We hope this contribution will help people to begin to rebuild their lives, in some small way. We are very aware that many of the bidders have also made private donations to various organizations doing excellent work in southeast Asia and we are moved that breeders worldwide reacted so generously to support this very worthy cause."
In order to respond to the urgent needs of the Red Cross and their international partners, payment will be required immediately. The nominations were therefore offered on a no guarantee basis but will include a right of return. In most cases, the no-guarantee bid exceeded the stallion's live foal fee.
Topping the total auction was leading sire Sadler's Wells. Khalid Abdullah's Juddmonte Farms went to 300,000 euros (US$393,480) for a season to the son of Northern Dancer who earned his 13th consecutive and 14th overall leading sire in England and Ireland title with 83 winners from 199 runners earning $7,582,687. Underbidder Gary Middlebrook donated 50,000 euros to the fund. Sadler's Wells stands at Coolmore Stud in Ireland.
Robert and Janice McNair paid $170,000 for a season to
Fusaichi Pegasus . The Kentucky Derby (gr. I) winning son of Mr. Prospector will stand the 2005 season for $150,000. Walter Haefner's Moyglare Stud went to $160,000 for a season to
Giant's Causeway . The son of
Storm Cat will stand the 2005 season for $150,000. Both stallions stand at Ashford Stud near Versailles, Ky.
