Thirteen often is viewed as an unlucky number. But not when it refers to Sadler's Wells nowadays.

The 24-year-old son of Northern Dancer who stands at John Magnier and partners' Coolmore Stud in Ireland bettered the record of late 18th century English great Highflyer with his 13th consecutive leading sire title and his 14th overall. Sadler's Wells, who started his streak in 1992, finished 2004 with earnings of $7,582,687. Produced from the Bold Reason mare Fairy Bridge, Sadler's Wells first led the sire list in 1990 and was second the following year.

Kingmambo, who ranked fifth on the list with progeny earnings of $2,361,148, is the sole North American-based stallion in the top 10. Kingmambo (Mr. Prospector--Miesque, by Nureyev) stands at William S. Farish's Lane's End Farm near Versailles, Ky.

Danehill, who ranked second on the list, topped the English/Irish sires of 2-year-olds list. By Danzig out of the His Majesty mare Razyana, the deceased stallion was represented by the 2-year-old earners of $1,127,092. Two first-crop sires, Giant's Causeway   and Montjeu, both of whom are Coolmore stallions, ranked third and eighth, respectively, with $918,751 and $539,127. Giant's Causeway is based at Ashford Stud near Versailles, Ky.
