Crimson Stag, with Robby Albarado up, wins the Crescent City Derby for Louisiana-bred 3YOs, Saturday at Fair Grounds Race Course.
Odds-on favorite Crimson Stag made every pole a winning one, turning back longshot Zarb's Music Man to win the $75,000 Crescent City Derby for 3-year-old Louisiana-breds Saturday at Fair Grounds Race Course.
Zarb's Music Man circled the tiring stalkers and moved into second, but could not make an impact on Crimson Stag, who proved too classy for his rivals, crossing the wire a length in front in 1:46.77 for the 1 1/16-mile race. It was another 4 1/2 lengths back to Prince T., who held off Surgeon of Choice for the show in the field of seven.
With leading rider Robby Albarado aboard, the son of sprint-influenced sire Glitterman
broke from his inside post and dictated the early running in his first attempt around two turns. He opened up a clear advantage over Prince T. and St. Roch down the backstretch through a quick half-mile in 46.95. As the field rounded the far turn, Crimson Stag was up to the task, shaking off Prince T. and St. Roch to open up on the field as they straightened for home.
"He was very game, but he still has that sprint mentality," said Albarado. "I think that he can continue to learn how to stretch out, because he kept giving me more down the lane."
Trained by Dallas Stewart, Crimson Stag continued his domination of Louisiana-breds. He previously won the $100,000 Juvenile on Louisiana Champions Day last month in impressive fashion.
Crimson Stag returned $3.80 to win and raised his career earnings to $147,050 with his third lifetime victory for owner West Point Thoroughbreds.
