Prairie Meadows and the Polk County Board of Supervisors joined efforts to pledge up to $100,000 in matching funds to the Southeast Asia Relief Fund through the American Red Cross and challenged the community to join in the effort.

To aid in the disaster relief fund for the victims of the tsunami, up to $50,000 each has been pledged by Prairie Meadows and Polk County matching community funds donated to the Central Iowa Chapter of the American Red Cross.

"Even though the victims of the devastating tsunami in South Asia are thousands of miles away, their pain and suffering is felt here in the heartland," said Jack Bishop, chairman of the Racing Association of Central Iowa board of directors. "We challenge the caring people of Iowa to help with this effort and bring the total donation to at least $200,000. This effort is a reflection of the mission of Prairie Meadows to commit resources to improve the quality of life. It is our hope that these contributions channeled through the American Red Cross to the Southeast Asia Relief Fund will bring comfort to those surviving."

"Polk County has a long history of providing services to our citizens in need," says Polk County Supervisors chairman Tom Hockensmith. "The devastation of the tsunami disaster should not be ignored, and we must join together as a community to do whatever we can to assist those affected by the disaster."

Polk County employees are also collecting individual donations for the relief fund.
