Retired Trainer Sylvia Bishop Dead

Sylvia Bishop, the first female African-American licensed to train Thoroughbreds in the U.S., died Dec. 27 in Ranson, W.Va., following a short illness. She was 84.
Bishop, who got her license in 1954, trained at Charles Town and on the Maryland fair circuit. At the Cumberland meeting, she once was the leading trainer. She retired in 2000.
Bishop's survivors include a daughter.
