Ariel Smith Hospitalized After Four-Horse Spill
Jockey Ariel Smith, racing on the lead in Sunday's second race at Aqueduct, was injured in a four-horse spill that began when the maiden filly he was riding, Patriotic Princess, broke down at the five-sixteenths pole.Smith was taken to nearby Jamaica Hospital with injuries that were not considered critical. A jockeys' room spokesman said Smith may have injured his knee.Patriotic Princess visibly shortened stride before going in the 1-1/8 mile maiden special weight event for New York-bred fillies and mares. The first horse in Patriotic Princess' path managed to escape danger, but three others were not so lucky. The chain reaction sent Rafael Bejarano, the leading rider in the country last year, along with apprentices Oscar Gomez and Channing Hill off their mounts and to the ground.Hill and Gomez got to their feet immediately. Bejarano was face down on the track for a few minutes before getting up to check on Smith. All three walked away from the mishap.
