Wilko to take time off to heal quarter crack after loss in Saturday's Hollywood Futurity.
Breeders' Cup Juvenile (gr. I) winner Wilko, who finished a nose behind Giacomo in third in Saturday's Hollywood Futurity (gr. I), will get some time off to allow a quarter crack to heal, according to trainer Craig Dollase.
"It was a little tender around the area where we had a patch," said Dollase Sunday of the left front hoof that flared up the day before the race. "He'll get a little break, and it should grow out fine. It's unfortunate this happened and he wasn't 100%, but he gave a big effort and we're looking forward to the next go-round."
Declan's Moon, who climaxed an unbeaten 2-year-old campaign with a victory in the Futurity, will continue to train at Hollywood Park this winter, trainer Ron Ellis said Sunday.
"He's going to stay at Hollywood," said Ellis. "He's been training here since the day after he broke his maiden at Del Mar (July 31)."
Ellis said the Maryland-bred gelding "ate up good" and would be walked for seven to ten days before more specific plans are formulated for his 3-year-old debut.
"I celebrated last night with the Siegels (owners Mace and Samantha), who invited about 20 people to a restaurant in Brentwood," said Ellis. "It was a win-or-lose dinner, so I was glad we won. It probably wouldn't have been much fun if we had lost."
The Proud Accolade camp remained puzzled by the Champagne Stakes (gr. I) winner's dull fifth-place showing.
"He ate up and we went over him twice this morning and couldn't find anything wrong," said Michael McCarthy, assistant to trainer Todd Pletcher. "The way he had trained here the last 10 days, we expected more. John (Velazquez) said he warmed up beautifully and was in the position he wanted on the backside."
Proud Accolade is scheduled to be shipped to Palm Meadows in Florida on Tuesday to rejoin Pletcher.
