Defending champion Katdogawn can become the only two-time winner of the $150,000 Dahlia Handicap (gr. IIT) Monday when 10 fillies and mares vie on closing day of Hollywood Park's autumn meet.
A 4-year-old filly that scored a nose victory over Personal Legend at odds of 7-1 in last year's renewal of the 1 1/6-mile stakes race, Katdogawn faces no easy task this year. Although second four times, she has not reached the wire first in nine starts since then, although she was awarded victory in the Santa Ana Handicap (gr. IIT) when Megahertz was disqualified for stretch interference at Santa Anita in March.
Katdogawn likely will be third choice on Monday behind Belleski, a winner of her last three races, and Janeian, who defeated Katdogawn by two lengths in Hollywood Park's Royal Heroine Stakes (gr. IIIT) on July 3.
Belleski will carry high weight of 120 pounds. Corey Nakatani, aboard for the 5-year-old mare's last three victorious efforts, has the riding assignment. Janeian, who has not raced at Hollywood Park since her Royal Heroine triumph, will be handled by Garrett Gomez at 118 pounds. Katdogawn, partnered by jockey Kent Desormeaux, was assigned 117.
Trained by John Sadler for Mr. and Mrs. Jerome Moss, Belleski has won eight of 15 starts while earning $374,586. Since breaking her maiden in her fourth start, the Kentucky-bred daughter of Polish Numbers has been beaten by more than two lengths but once, and that was in the Matriarch (gr. IT) last year. Her victories include back-to-back wins the last two years in the Senator Ken Maddy Handicap (gr. IIIT) at Santa Anita.
New Zealand-bred Janeian shows a 9-6-6 record in 35 career starts. The 6-year-old, trained by Bret Calhoun for Greg England, has banked $368,114.
British-bred Katdogawn's overall record of 6-6-4 in 24 starts has generated earnings of $594,803 for a partnership headed by Jim Ford Inc. Trained by James Cassidy, her last ten starts have been in graded stakes races.$150,000 Dahlia Handicap (gr. IIT), fillies & mares 3 & up, 1 1/6 miles (turf)
