EVA Case Detected in United Kingdom

The United Kingdom's Department for the Environment, Food, and Rural Affairs announced Dec. 17 that it imposed restrictions on Oct. 29 on a 5-year-old stallion on a premises in the Newmarket area of Suffolk following a positive blood test result for equine viral arteritis. The horse's semen was tested, the outcome of which was also positive.

The stallion has been in quarantine since being imported about three months ago (Defra has not identified the horse's country of origin). The horse was quarantined in anticipation of onward exportation out of the United Kingdom. The initial EVA tests were undertaken as part of export testing requirements.

The State Veterinary Service is currently undertaking a detailed investigation of the case, including the tracing of any animals which might have come in contact with the infected stallion.
