Silmaril lived up to the expectations of her trainer and the public at Pimlico when she drove to a popular victory in Saturday's $100,000 Geisha Handicap for Maryland-bred fillies and mares.

Trainer Chris Grove said he expected a top effort from the 3-year-old daughter of Diamond. She did, completing the nine furlongs over the sloppy going in 1:53.89 and paying $4.80. Pour It On rallied courageously to take the second spot, 1 1/4 lengths behind. Chrusciki finished third.

Abel Castellano rode the winner.

Coming by the 1-/16th pole, with victory assured, Silmaril started to drift, allowing the finish to be closer than it really appeared.

Silmaril has won three added-money races for Maryland-breds this year. Saturday's victory marked her fifth win in seven starts in 2004 and her sixth tally in nine starts overall.
