Zippy Chippy: From Hapless Loser to Movie Star?

Zippy Chippy, the 13-year-old gelding whose winless career in 100 starts has been well-publicized, apparently has been retired by owner-trainer Felix Monserrate.

The Rochester (N.Y.) Democrat and American reported that Monserrate plans to use Zippy as a stable pony to escort racehorses to the track. "I'm not sure he'll like it, but I'm going to give it a try," the trainer said of his plans for the gelding.

"A movie could be in the works and the producer suggested that it would be better to retire him now than risk an unhappy ending," Monserrate said of the decision to retire Zippy Chippy.

In addition to once being banned by the stewards from racing at Finger Lakes, Zippy also gained notoriety by defeating harness horses twice in exhibition races and taking part in exhibition races against members of a minor league baseball team.

A New York-bred son of Compliance, Zippy retires with a record of eight seconds and 12 thirds from 100 starts, all in maiden special weight company, and earnings of $30,834.
