A. Kales Company's R Obsession closed late in the $100,000 Frances A. Genter Stakes for 3-year-old fillies at Calder on Saturday to defeat the pacesetting longshot Our Exploit by 1 ¼ lengths.
Trained by Tim Ritvo, R Obsession covered the 7 ½ furlongs on turf in 1:28 and was ridden to victory by Manoel Cruz.
R Obsession is a 3-year-old Florida-bred daughter of Notebook who also won the Judy's Red Shoes Stakes at Calder on Sept. 11. She was sent off at odds of 9-to-1 and returned $20.00, 8.60 and 6.20.
Setting the pace was Our Exploit, ridden by jockey Gary Boulanger. That filly appeared to have the race won until she began to shorten stride in deep stretch and R Obsession stormed to the lead on the inside. Two-and-a-half lengths behind Our Exploit, it was Marina de Chavon nipping Capeside Lady by a head for third.
