Calder Increases Purses $1,000 Per Overnight

Horsemen at Calder will find a little something extra on their plates Thanksgiving Day. The track announced a purse increase of $1,000 per overnight race, which will take effect with the Nov. 25 race card.

A release from the South Florida track, owned by Churchill Downs Inc., said the increase is the result of "conservative purse account management at the beginning of the meet." The meeting began Oct. 24.

So far this meet, average handle on full-card simulcasting has increased 18.5% (through Nov. 19), and overall business has also improved over the same period a year ago.
