Espinoza to Represent United States in Jockey Challenge

Jockey Victor Espinoza will represent the United States in the 2004 Cathay Pacific International Jockey Challenge Dec. 8 at Happy Valley. The event is a prelude to the Dec. 12 Cathay Pacific Hong Kong International Races at Sha Tin.Espinoza, who is currently (through Nov. 18) the third ranked North American jockey earnings with $14,115,407, with 218 wins from 1,227 starts (18% win percentage) finished second behind Australian representative Damien Oliver last year. Joining Espinoza and Oliver in the challenge will be Mirco Demuro (Italy); Frankie Dettori (United Arab Emirates); Shane Dye (New Zealand); Kieren Fallon (Great Britain); Christophe Soumillon (France); Jamie Spencer (Ireland); Andreas Suborics (Germany); Yutaka Take (Japan); and Douglas Whyte (Hong Kong).The jockeys are randomly assigned mounts in a draw and the winner will be the one accumulating the most points during three races.Points scoring works as follows: for each of the three races 12 points are awarded to the winning jockey; six points to the runner-up; four points to the third-place finisher; three points for fourth; and two points for fifth.
The champion is the jockey with the highest total points. His reward will be HK$200,000 with HK$100,000 going to the second-place finisher. In the event of a tie, the jockey who has the most number of high point-earning places receives the prize.
