Trainer Steve Asmussen is inching closer to the North American single-season record for wins by a trainer. As of Nov. 19, Asmussen has 492 wins on the year. The current single-season record is held by Jack Van Berg, who saddled 496 winners (from 2,362 starters) in 1976.
Asmussen, 39, won two races Friday – at Hawthorne and Sunland Park – and has 31 horses entered at six tracks Saturday. He won three races at Churchill Downs on Thursday and scored a victory at Sam Houston Park.
Asmussen has horses running in Kentucky, Louisiana, Texas, and New Mexico.
Last year trainer Scott Lake needed 2,009 starts to win the training title by a 455-452 margin over Asmussen. Two years ago Asmussen claimed the title by seven wins (407) over Lake (Asmussen had 1,810 starters).
