Norfolk Knight Battles A Bit O'Gold in Slots Cup

Norfolk Knight takes a three-race winning streak into Saturday's $159,750 Woodbine Slots Cup (Can-III), where he'll face three opponents.

The 5-year-old son of Tejabo is coming off a 10 3/4-length win in his prep for the Slots Cup as the even-money choice on Oct. 31.

"I never expected him to be that good, but he impressed me," said jockey Jill Scharfstein of the dominating performance. "It wasn't the same caliber of horses that we'll face on Saturday, but he just blows me away. I get butterflies before I get out there ... it's just him. I don't know what it is. He gets better and better every time."

The Margaret Squires-owned gelding goes for his second added-money victory, having taken the Durham Cup (Can-III) Oct. 16 at Saturday's 1 1/16-mile distance. The lifetime earner of $567,487 from 25 starts sports a record of 3-0-1 at the distance, all of those wins coming in 2004 for trainer Hugo Dittfach.

Norfolk Knight has hooked a small but strong field of rivals, including Prince of Wales and Breeders' Stakes champion A Bit O'Gold, who is also seeking his fourth consecutive victory.

"Just before the wire in the Durham Cup, I promised him a fruit plate and peppermints," said the 22-year-old Saskatchewan native. "I always bring him something after each race. He runs as hard as he can and as fast as he can every time he gets out there."
